Gyroplanes are a unique aircraft. They have a propeller for thrust, like an airplane, but instead of wings for lift they have a large rotor blade overhead, like a helicopter. But the rotor is not powered. It rotates from air flowing through it as the aircraft is pushed forward by the propeller. This unpowered rotorblade is Airgyro's SafetyRotor™.
Airgyro only sells and trains in Gyroplanes with true centerline thrust and large, properly designed horizontal stabilizers, which help make our gyroplanes the safest form of flight.
The first major safety feature is that a Gyroplane can not stall, like an airplane will. Even if the engine quits entirely, the free-rotating SafetyRotor simply acts like a parachute. In fact, it is better than that. Since the rotor is not powered anyway, you can land the Gyroplane under full control, just like you normally land. Descending keeps the rotor turning and you can get about 4,000 feet of horizontal distance for every 1,000 feet of elevation. And that's when the second major safety feature of a Gyroplane comes into play. A Gyroplane can land, similar to a helicopter, in a very short distance. You don't need to find a runway - just enough distance for your 30 foot rotor. You won't go taxiing into something upon landing.
Gyroplanes are way simpler to fly than a helicopter. You only need one hand, rather than both hands and both feet. Gyroplanes are even easier to fly than fixed wing airplanes. They can fly slower, so reaction times are much more relaxed in a gyroplane. And the "gyro" effect of the rotor actually provides stability to the aircraft. They are much more stable in gusty winds than a fixed wing airplane, for example. It is possible for a gyroplane to fly with unwavering stability, without the pilot's hands on the controls. That is something you don't do in other aircraft, and is a demonstration of the ease and safety that is built into a properly designed Gryoplane.
Because of their ability to fly slow and safely, Gyroplanes are the very easiest way to learn to fly. And because you can learn easily and quickly in a gyroplane, you will actually earn your pilot's license. Airgyro has met many people who started taking flying lessons the traditional way, and never finished even after paying for 40 or more hours of instruction. Consider that in a Gyroplane, you don't have to practice recovering from dizzying or sickening stalls. A gyroplane can't stall. You can take things slowly, there is less to master, and yet all of the hours in the gyroplane will count toward any of the regular pilot licenses.
Beyond all the talk about ease of flying a gyroplane, and the safety of flying a gyroplane, there is one more factor. Gyroplanes are fun. They can fly low and slow, and they have unmatched visibility, so you can see and enjoy the scenery instead of just whizzing over it. They can turn on a dime, fly backwards, and descend vertically. And if you are the pilot, you can also enjoy the view, because you don't have to put all of your attention into just flying the aircraft.
